Qatar is experiencing significant growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector, with projections indicating revenue generation of QR4.72bn ($1.3bn) for this year. The automotive IoT segment is expected to dominate the market, with a projected volume of QR1.2bn ($353.3m) in 2024. The IoT market is forecasted to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.77% from 2024 to 2029, reaching a market volume of QR6.54bn ($1.8bn) during the forecast period.

Qatar is recognized as one of the fastest-growing economies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the broader Middle East, undergoing a significant digital transformation. The United States is projected to lead the IoT market in revenue generation globally, with an estimated $342.5bn expected in 2024. China remains the leading manufacturer of IoT devices. Qatar has been actively pursuing the adoption and implementation of IoT technology, driven by government initiatives like the Tasmu Smart Qatar program, which aims to establish Qatar as a smart nation utilizing IoT.

The Qatar government’s commitment to Smart Cities has led to the development of award-winning initiatives such as Msheireb Downtown and Lusail City, both exemplifying the implementation of IoT. IoT has also been adopted across various sectors in Qatar, including the oil and gas industry, healthcare, and transportation. The advent of 5G technology has transformed wireless communication methods for IoT applications, with Qatar at the forefront of this technology.

Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar have made significant strides in the realm of 5G technology, with Ooredoo being the first operator globally to launch a live 5G network and Vodafone successfully validating the 6GHz spectrum using advanced 128T/R Massive MIMO technology. A recent report from Opensignal revealed that Qatari users experience the fastest average 5G download speeds among countries in the EMEA region, ranking first in download speeds among countries with a land area of less than 200,000 square kilometers.

In terms of leading companies in Qatar’s IoT sector, a study by Mordor Intelligence identified the top five companies based on market share reports for 2023 and 2024. Labeeb IoT, a product of the Qatar Mobility Innovations Center, tops the list, followed by Ooredoo, Vodafone Qatar, Cisco Systems, and Huawei Technologies. Qatar’s rapid adoption of IoT technology and investment in 5G infrastructure has positioned the country as a prominent market for IoT solutions within the Middle East region.
