The study conducted by Doha International Family Institute (DIFI) has revealed a concerning trend of children’s overuse of technology due to familial neglect and lack of supervision. Parents are often turning to smartphones and electronic devices as a means to keep their children occupied, leading to social isolation and the potential for long-term negative effects on their physical and emotional well-being.

With the pervasive use of technology in today’s world, devices have become a substitute for caregivers, offering entertainment and educational opportunities. However, an excessive reliance on screens can have detrimental effects on children’s health and limit their social interactions, which are crucial for their overall development. It is essential for parents to take an active role in managing their children’s technology use and fostering open communication about the risks and benefits associated with it.

Fatima Al Mutawaa, a Research and Grant Specialist at DIFI, emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between technology use and other activities. She suggests providing alternative options such as sports, setting clear guidelines for screen time, and prioritizing family time to reduce reliance on digital devices. By implementing these practices, parents can help prevent social isolation and negative consequences associated with excessive screen time.

In addition to setting boundaries around technology use, parents play a crucial role in offering emotional support and guidance to their children. While technology can provide educational resources and interactive learning tools, it cannot replace the emotional connection and understanding that parents provide. By fostering strong family bonds and creating a balanced digital environment, parents and children can work together to cultivate healthy technology habits and promote well-being.

It is crucial for parents to be aware of the potential consequences of excessive technology use, including impacts on behavior, sleep, physical health, and academic performance. By engaging in open communication with their children and setting clear rules around device usage, parents can help prevent negative outcomes and support their children’s overall development. Technology should be viewed as a tool to be carefully managed, rather than a substitute for parental supervision and interaction.

In conclusion, the study by DIFI highlights the importance of addressing the connection between family dynamics and technology use among children. By fostering open communication, setting boundaries, and providing alternative activities, parents can help mitigate the risks associated with excessive screen time and promote healthy technology habits. By working together, parents and children can create a balanced digital environment that supports their overall well-being and strengthens family bonds.
