Germany’s Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have expressed the need for Russia to participate in a future peace conference aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Scholz emphasized the urgency of resolving the conflict and stated that both leaders agree on the necessity of Russia’s presence in upcoming talks. While a previous international peace conference in Switzerland saw 78 countries expressing support for Ukraine’s ‘territorial integrity’, the absence of Russia left the path forward unclear. Scholz’s call for increased efforts to end the war comes amid political discontent in Germany over the government’s support of Ukraine, with some advocating for more diplomatic approaches towards Russia.

Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy has expressed gratitude for the support received at the Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Ramstein, urging for accelerated deliveries of military hardware to the battlefield. Zelenskyy also requested permission to use these weapons for strikes deeper inside Russia. The meeting saw commitments of military aid from the US, the UK, and Germany, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s position and protecting its cities from Russian attacks. Zelenskyy emphasized the need to strengthen Ukraine and its defense forces in the face of ongoing conflict and thanked those working and fighting for the country’s interests.

On the battlefield, reports from Russia’s Belgorod region show the aftermath of Ukrainian shelling on the village of Nikolskoe, with two residential buildings damaged and three people injured. Russia’s Defence Ministry reported the downing of drones over the Belgorod and Kursk regions, highlighting the continued military activity in the area. In Ukraine, fierce fighting persists near the town of Pokrovsk, where over 20,000 residents remain despite evacuation efforts. A recent Russian air strike on an electricity substation in the town left many without power, underscoring the challenges faced by civilians caught in the conflict.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the need for diplomatic solutions and international cooperation remains crucial in achieving lasting peace. The call for Russia’s participation in future peace talks reflects a recognition of the importance of all parties coming together to find a resolution to the war. With support and aid pouring in from various countries, the focus is on strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and protecting its citizens from further harm. The ongoing violence and destruction serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of war, underscoring the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict for the sake of all those affected.
