The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification in Saudi Arabia is making remarkable progress in its coastal reforestation project by planting 13 million mangrove seedlings across various regions of the country. This initiative forms a crucial part of the Saudi Green Initiative, which seeks to enhance the nation’s ecological sustainability by increasing its green cover. The distribution of the project includes 5.5 million seedlings in Jazan, 2.4 million in Makkah, two million in Madinah, 1.5 million in Tabuk, one million in Asir, and 500,000 in the Eastern Region. The center’s overarching goal is to plant 100 million mangrove trees along the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf coasts in the coming years.

In addition to the ongoing coastal reforestation project, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification launched a significant initiative over a year ago to plant 700,000 mangrove seedlings. This included planting 200,000 seedlings on Ras Abu Ali Island in the Jubail Governorate and 500,000 in Al-Wajh Governorate. To ensure the successful survival and growth of these plantations, the center has implemented measures such as fencing and caretaking of the seedlings to protect them from algae, seaweed, grazing, and encroachment. These efforts demonstrate a commitment to increasing green cover and combating desertification in Saudi Arabia’s coastal regions.
