Qatar has been dedicated to strengthening its relationship with the United Nations since joining the organization. The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations was established in New York in 1971, marking the beginning of an active and influential role in the international community. Over the past five decades, eight ambassadors have led Qatar’s Permanent Mission, showcasing a successful partnership with the UN. H E Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani currently serves as Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, having advanced through the ranks and chaired important committees during her tenure.

H E the late Ambassador Jassim bin Yousef Al Jamal was the first Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations. His period saw coordination among Arab ambassadors, particularly regarding issues like the Palestinian cause. H E Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari succeeded Ambassador Al Jamal and held the position from 1984 to 1990, achieving significant roles within the United Nations General Assembly. Subsequent ambassadors continued to navigate regional challenges, with H E Ambassador Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr overseeing Qatar’s seat on the UN Security Council in 2006.

Since 2013, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani has been leading Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, emphasizing Qatar’s role in promoting peace and fostering cooperation in developmental and humanitarian efforts. Dr. Yusuf Mohammed Al Obaidan, a member of the National Human Rights Committee, praised Qatar’s Permanent Representatives for their efforts in enhancing Qatar’s standing within the UN and explaining the country’s foreign policy based on rationality and balance. These representatives have addressed major global events with wisdom, contributing to decisions and recommendations that have helped resolve regional and international issues.

Qatar’s commitment to the United Nations is evident through the active role played by its Permanent Representatives over the decades. From the establishment of the Permanent Mission in 1971 to the current leadership of Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s engagement with the UN has been focused on promoting peace, security, and development globally. The ambassadors representing Qatar at the UN have navigated regional challenges, chaired important committees, and contributed to significant decisions that have shaped international relations.

Each Permanent Representative has brought their own expertise and diplomatic skills to the role, building upon the foundation laid by their predecessors. Ambassador Al Jamal’s coordination among Arab ambassadors set the stage for future representatives to address key issues affecting the region. Ambassador Al Kuwari’s leadership within the UN General Assembly paved the way for Qatar to secure a seat on the Security Council, showcasing the country’s growing influence within the organization.

Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani’s leadership since 2013 has further solidified Qatar’s commitment to the United Nations. Her role in enhancing Qatar’s reputation within the UN and promoting peace and cooperation on the global stage has earned Qatar increased trust and respect internationally. With each Permanent Representative contributing to Qatar’s diplomatic efforts at the UN, the country continues to play a significant role in addressing global challenges and advocating for collective solutions to pressing issues.

In conclusion, Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has been instrumental in advancing the country’s interests and promoting cooperation within the international community. The dedication and leadership of each ambassador have strengthened Qatar’s standing within the UN, contributing to important decisions and resolutions that have had a lasting impact on global affairs. As Qatar continues to engage with the UN, its commitment to peace, security, and development remains steadfast, ensuring that it plays a vital role in shaping the future of the international stage.
