The State of Qatar, through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, recently chaired the 3rd meeting of the technical committee to prepare for the meetings of the undersecretaries responsible for environmental affairs in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Chaired by Ahmed Al Ibrahim, the Director of the Environmental Assessment and Permit Department at the MECC, the meeting focused on various important topics including the environmental trends of the GCC countries for the year 2020, the agreement to preserve wildlife and its natural habitats in the GCC countries, and the strategic plan of the committee of ministers responsible for environmental affairs.

During the meeting, discussions were also held on the Supreme Council’s decision on non-tariff restrictions related to the environment, the GCC environmental portal, the 16th conference of the parties to the United Nations convention to combat desertification, the establishment of a GCC center for environmental and climate studies, the preparation of a GCC index, and a study of the impact of dust and its relationship to global health standards. These topics are crucial in addressing environmental challenges and ensuring sustainable development in the GCC countries.

In addition to the agenda items, participants reviewed the progress made towards achieving the goals set by the committee. The meeting concluded with a set of recommendations that will be presented at the next meeting of the committee of Their Excellencies the undersecretaries responsible for environmental affairs, scheduled to take place in September 2024. These recommendations will play a key role in guiding future actions and policies related to environmental conservation and climate change in the GCC countries.

The collaboration and coordination among the GCC countries in addressing environmental issues are essential for creating a sustainable future for the region. By sharing knowledge, best practices, and resources, the countries can work together towards common goals such as preserving wildlife, combatting desertification, and mitigating the impact of dust on public health. The establishment of a GCC center for environmental and climate studies will further enhance this cooperation and facilitate joint efforts in addressing environmental challenges.

The strategic plan developed by the committee of ministers responsible for environmental affairs serves as a roadmap for achieving environmental goals and targets in the GCC countries. By implementing this plan effectively and monitoring progress towards its objectives, the countries can ensure that they are on track to meet their environmental commitments and obligations. The GCC environmental portal will also play a crucial role in enhancing transparency and sharing information on environmental initiatives and policies among the member states.

Overall, the 3rd meeting of the technical committee reflects the commitment of the GCC countries to working together towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly future. By addressing priority topics, sharing knowledge and resources, and developing strategic plans, the countries are taking proactive steps to protect the environment and combat climate change. The recommendations made at the meeting will guide future actions and initiatives, ensuring that the GCC countries continue to lead in environmental conservation and sustainability.
