Abdulwahid Qarata emerged victorious in Muharraq’s parliamentary runoff, defeating Ebrahim Al Shaikh with 53% of the vote. Qarata, a member of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, managed to close the gap after trailing behind in the first round. The contest attracted attention as the frontrunners battled it out in a race involving seven independent candidates.

While turnout slightly decreased during the runoff, the election was praised for its orderly conduct. Councillor Nawaf Hamza lauded the calm atmosphere at polling stations and the media’s role in maintaining transparency. Minister Adel Al Mawwda also commended the press for their impartial reporting and the increase in voters in the afternoon.

Human rights organizations closely monitored the election, noting minor irregularities such as campaign activities near polling stations. Additional polling booths were set up at different locations to accommodate voters. Qarata expressed gratitude to his supporters, family, and friends for their efforts in backing his campaign, despite facing logistical challenges and smear campaigns.

The victory speech by Qarata highlighted the hard work of his campaign team and the support of his supporters in the face of challenges. One voter, Nada Ali, shared a positive experience with the organizers, noting the smooth process due to fewer people. The Bahrain Human Rights Society, Bahrain Transparency Society, and the National Institution for Human Rights were among the organizations closely monitoring the election.

Overall, the election in Muharraq’s parliamentary runoff showcased the democratic process in action, with Qarata’s unexpected win capturing the district’s attention. Despite the minor irregularities noted by human rights organizations, the election was conducted in an orderly manner. The gratitude expressed by Qarata towards his supporters and the smooth voting process as mentioned by a voter highlighted a positive aspect of the electoral process. The media’s role in ensuring transparency and the increase in voter turnout in the afternoon were also recognized as essential elements of a successful election.
