The Paris Judicial Court has released a list of 12 potential charges against Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, which include complicity in various crimes such as the distribution of child pornography, sale of narcotics, and organized fraud and money laundering. The charges also accuse Durov of refusing government requests to intercept information and documents, as well as providing cryptology tools to users without proper authorization. Durov was arrested at Bourget airport outside Paris and will remain in custody until Wednesday.

Following Durov’s arrest, the price of Toncoin (TON), a digital asset linked to Telegram, plummeted, losing $2.7 billion in market value and falling out of the top 10 cryptocurrencies. The coin is currently down 21.47% over the past week and is trading at $5.38. The charges against Durov come as part of a judicial investigation that began on July 8, 2024, and involves the center for the fight against digital crime (C3N) and the national anti-fraud office (ONAF).

The potential charges against Durov span a wide range of criminal activities, including fraud, underage pornographic images, narcotic distribution, and money laundering. The charges also accuse Durov of providing users with access to cryptology tools without proper government authorization. The prosecutor’s office stated that Durov’s platform enabled illicit transactions in an organized group and refused to cooperate with authorities upon request.

The Paris prosecutor’s office revealed that Durov was charged with possession of images of underage pornography and circulating them. In addition, three counts of charges noted that Durov provided Telegram users with access to cryptology tools and services without proper authorization. The prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of these charges, leading to Durov being kept in custody until Wednesday. Initially, Durov’s arrest raised speculation within the industry due to lack of official charges at the time.

Cryptonews, a trusted source in the crypto industry, has been following the developments closely and providing accurate and impartial reporting on the situation. With over a decade of experience in covering cryptocurrencies, Cryptonews combines in-depth market knowledge with hands-on testing of blockchain technologies. The team’s commitment to quality journalism ensures that readers receive authoritative insights they can rely on in the dynamic world of digital assets.

In conclusion, the charges against Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, have sent shockwaves through the crypto industry. The potential charges, which include involvement in various criminal activities and unauthorized provision of cryptology tools, have had a significant impact on the price of Toncoin and raised concerns about content moderation practices on the platform. As the legal proceedings unfold, the industry will be closely watching to see how this case develops and what implications it may have for the broader crypto community.
