The Sultanate of Oman recently commended an advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice regarding the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967. Oman praised the opinion as a reflection of the international community’s commitment to justice and international law, urging Israel to end its illegal presence in Palestine. The statement was delivered by Khalid Saleh Al Rubkhi, Deputy Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations, at a special session of the UN General Assembly. Oman called on the international community to take collective responsibility in implementing the advisory opinion and working towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Oman expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip, including Israel’s blockade and ongoing military operations. The country called for the immediate lifting of the siege and the facilitation of urgent humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. Oman emphasized the importance of international efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and support political efforts towards lasting peace. Oman also called on all member states to support a draft resolution before the UN General Assembly, stressing the moral responsibility to protect the rights of peoples and supporting the Palestinian cause.

Oman called for the termination of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands and the realization of a fair, comprehensive solution that includes the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Oman highlighted the need for international support in rebuilding the Gaza Strip and ensuring a decent life for Palestinians, addressing both the humanitarian situation and political efforts for peace. The country reiterated its unwavering backing for the Palestinian people in their strive to realize their legitimate aspirations, emphasizing the importance of justice, equality, and the rule of law in achieving lasting peace.

In its commendation of the ICJ’s advisory opinion, Oman underscored the importance of upholding international legitimacy in supporting the rights of the Palestinian people. The country’s statement urged Israel to compensate the Palestinian people for damages caused by its policies and called for an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories. Oman’s position reflects a commitment to justice, equality, and the rule of law as foundations for achieving lasting peace in the region. By supporting the draft resolution before the UN General Assembly and advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people, Oman seeks to contribute to efforts towards peace and security in the Middle East.
