The Ministry of Municipality in Qatar recently participated in celebrating World Food Day on October 16th, under the theme “The Right to Food for a Better Life and Future.” The event aimed to promote a flexible, sustainable, and fair food system by 2030. Various relevant authorities attended the event, including the Assistant Undersecretary for Agriculture and Food Security Affairs, Eng. Fahad Mohammed Al Qahtani, and Vice Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee, Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari.

During the event, Assistant Director of the Food Security Department, Hamad Hadi Al Hajri, highlighted Qatar’s efforts to support local food producers. The state provides essential production inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides to farmers, as well as marketing support to ensure fair prices and reduce food loss. Additionally, Qatar supports livestock producers by providing necessary feed and medicines, and invests in the fisheries sector by offering facilities for fish farming and fishing equipment.

Dr. Mohammed Saif Al Kuwari gave a presentation on the right to food, the challenges of food safety, including climate change and food waste, and Qatar’s efforts in achieving food security and self-sufficiency. Jassim Al Surour, Director of Administrative Services at Al Meera, discussed the company’s initiatives to ensure the availability of safe food through a network of branches across the country. Al Meera currently operates 70 branches to serve a large number of residents with quality products.

The event concluded with a presentation by Dr. Mohammed Al Sir from the Agricultural Affairs Department, emphasizing the importance of deepening awareness and finding solutions to combat hunger and poverty. The focus was not only on celebrating World Food Day but also on taking concrete steps towards addressing the global food crisis. Qatar’s commitment to supporting local food producers and ensuring food security was highlighted throughout the event.

As the world works towards achieving a more sustainable and fair food system by 2030, events like the World Food Day celebration in Qatar serve as a reminder of the importance of addressing food security issues. By supporting local producers, investing in key sectors like agriculture and fisheries, and raising awareness about the right to food, Qatar is taking proactive steps towards ensuring a better future for its citizens. Through collaboration with various stakeholders and continuous efforts to find solutions to food-related challenges, Qatar is demonstrating its commitment to promoting a healthier and more food-secure society.
