Saudi Minister of Tourism and Chairman of the Quality of Life Program, Ahmed Al-Khateeb, emphasized the importance of sustainable development in the travel and tourism sector during the fourth annual World Economic Forum Urban Transformation Summit in San Francisco. Al-Khateeb highlighted the challenges brought about by tourism growth, such as overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, and environmental pressures. He emphasized the need for sustainability to be at the core of addressing these challenges in order to shape the future of the industry.

Al-Khateeb stressed the need for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among industry leaders and experts to create a positive and lasting impact on tourism. He mentioned that forums like the WEF Summit play a crucial role in bringing together global stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions for the growth opportunities presented by the tourism sector. He also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in transforming tourism into a driver of sustainable development, urging governments to incentivize and support private partners who prioritize sustainability.

The Saudi Minister participated in key sessions during the Summit, including a strategy session on shaping the future of tourism and an executive roundtable discussion on the future of travel and tourism. The event brought together 250 participants over two and a half days to discuss a range of topics, including sustainable redevelopment, mobility transformation, innovation ecosystems, nature-positive infrastructure, and technology governance.

Al-Khateeb reiterated that tourism and sustainability are key pillars of Saudi Arabia’s Future Saudi Cities Program, and emphasized the commitment of Saudi leaders to these areas. He emphasized the need for city leaders, urban planners, and tourism experts from around the world to share best practices and develop smart, sustainable, and resilient cities. The Minister highlighted the role of strong public-private partnerships in driving sustainable development in the tourism sector.

In conclusion, Al-Khateeb’s address at the WEF Urban Transformation Summit underscored the critical importance of sustainable development in the travel and tourism sector. He called for collaborative efforts among industry leaders and experts to leverage growth opportunities responsibly and shape the future of tourism. The event provided a platform for discussions on key topics related to urban transformation, sustainable redevelopment, and technology governance, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to address the challenges facing the tourism industry.
