Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) has recently launched a new service called BeSolar, aimed at installing distributed solar energy systems in line with the goals of Qatar’s National Renewable Energy Strategy. This initiative includes the development of a distributed solar energy policy and a net billing program, encouraging customers to install solar energy systems in their homes, farms, Ezab, factories, and other properties to benefit from Qatar’s renewable solar energy sources. The net billing program allows customers to use the electricity generated from solar panels to meet their needs, with surplus energy being sent to the grid. KAHRAMAA then deducts the value of the surplus electricity from the next bill, resulting in cost savings for customers.

In addition to economic benefits, the BeSolar service also offers environmental advantages by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and contributing to the goals of Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy, Qatar National Vision 2030, and the Third National Development Strategy (2024-2030). The National Renewable Energy Strategy aims to increase the share of renewable energy in Qatar’s energy mix while reducing carbon dioxide emissions and ensuring grid reliability. The strategy includes targets such as producing 4 gigawatts of central photovoltaic solar energy and 200 megawatts of distributed solar energy systems by 2030, increasing the share of renewable energy in Qatar from 5% to 18%.

Customers interested in installing distributed solar energy systems can contact one of KAHRAMAA’s authorized contractors, who will guide them through the process. The installation process involves selecting an authorized contractor, obtaining initial approval, preparing the technical design, installing the solar system, connecting to smart meters, and starting to generate solar energy. KAHRAMAA has also opened registration for qualifying contractors to become authorized to install distributed solar energy systems. Contractors must undergo qualification steps to verify their eligibility, including being an authorized electrical contractor, meeting KAHRAMAA’s requirements, preparing necessary documents, and signing a self-declaration form. After submitting the required documents, contractors will undergo training, examination, and field visits to receive certification and a license to install solar energy systems.

Overall, the BeSolar service by KAHRAMAA is a significant step towards promoting renewable energy adoption in Qatar and achieving the targets set by the National Renewable Energy Strategy. By encouraging customers to install distributed solar energy systems, the program not only helps in utilizing Qatar’s clean and renewable energy sources but also offers economic benefits through cost savings on electricity bills. With a focus on environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, this initiative aligns with Qatar’s long-term vision for sustainability and energy independence. Interested customers and contractors can leverage this opportunity to contribute to Qatar’s renewable energy goals and make a positive impact on the environment and economy.
