Jeddah Municipality Will Prevent the Reemergence of Slums

The Municipality of Jeddah recently announced its commitment to preventing the return of slums to the governorate. This statement came after removal work was carried out on several buildings in Al-Harazat neighborhood, where buildings, warehouses, and commercial centers were constructed in a random and illegal manner over the years. According to Muhammad Al-Baqmi, the municipality’s spokesperson, the slum development project is crucial for improving the quality of life for residents in these neighborhoods. He highlighted that construction in some areas of the city had taken place irregularly on lands without legal deeds and building permits, leading to violations that require legal measures.

The municipality has taken significant steps to address the issue of illegal structures in Jeddah Governorate. The complete removal of 32 slums and the placement of barriers around the sites are just some of the measures implemented to combat visual distortion and improve the urban landscape. Main roads have been constructed to access some of the removed slums, while plans are underway to improve roads to others. These initiatives are part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aimed at enhancing the quality of life in communities and curbing negative phenomena in all aspects.

In addition to the removal of slums, the municipality also demolished 174 illegally built shops at Al-Barma 14 market in Al-Manarat neighborhood. These structures were operating in random and unsuitable environments, failing to meet health requirements. The dismantling of these shops is part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to enhance the urban environment and promote a healthier and safer community for residents. By taking a firm stance against illegal constructions and unauthorized commercial activities, the municipality is contributing to the overall development and beautification of Jeddah Governorate.

The slum development project in Jeddah is not only a local initiative but also significant at the regional level.
