World Humanitarian Day, observed on August 19, is a day to honor and pay tribute to humanitarian workers who risk their lives to provide aid and support to those in need. Giuseppe Saba, CEO of Dubai Humanitarian, shared his experiences as a humanitarian worker, highlighting the challenges and hardships faced in the field. Saba recalled his time in Rwanda during the genocide as one of the most difficult missions he has undertaken, stating that the memories of that mission still haunt him to this day. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the risks faced by aid workers in conflict zones and disaster areas.

The event held at Dubai Humanitarian to mark World Humanitarian Day brought together aid workers from various organizations to discuss their experiences and challenges. Ahmed AlZahid from IACAD shared a harrowing experience of being caught in a terrorist attack while on a mission abroad, highlighting the dangers faced by humanitarian workers in volatile environments. Grace Calites, a supply chain associate at WFP, talked about the challenges she faced in adapting to new roles and languages during her missions, showcasing the flexibility and adaptability required in humanitarian work.

Abdulla Al Shehhi, the CEO of Dubai Cares, shared his journey from being an electrical engineer to taking on a role in humanitarian work. Inspired by the impact of Dubai Cares’ fundraising activities, he transitioned into a role that allowed him to directly impact the lives of those in need. Mauricio Gomez, a Columbian engineer turned humanitarian worker, shared his decision to leave his job after witnessing the devastating effects of an earthquake in his hometown. His experience with the Red Cross marked the beginning of his career as a humanitarian worker, driven by a desire to make a difference.

The significance of World Humanitarian Day dates back to 2003, when a bomb attack in Baghdad claimed the lives of 22 aid workers, including the UN Special Representative for Iraq. In remembrance of this tragic event, the United Nations General Assembly designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day to honor the sacrifices made by humanitarian workers worldwide. The event serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges faced by those who dedicate their lives to helping others in times of crisis.

As the number of aid workers killed in the line of duty continues to rise, it is crucial to raise awareness about the dangers faced by humanitarian workers and provide support for their safety and well-being. The stories shared by aid workers at the event shed light on the resilience, courage, and dedication required to work in the humanitarian field. By honoring the contributions of humanitarian workers on World Humanitarian Day, we pay tribute to their selfless efforts and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
