How to obtain a freelance license in Dubai and Abu Dhabi: Cost and process explained

In today’s gig economy, freelancing has become a popular way for individuals to make money, whether they are fresh graduates, stay-at-home parents, or retirees looking for ways to stay engaged. In the UAE, there is a significant market for freelancers, with many companies in need of professional services for various projects. These opportunities can range from one-off projects to regular gigs, providing a steady stream of work for freelancers.

One important consideration for freelancers in the UAE is the need for a freelance license in order to legally conduct business. The process and cost of obtaining a license can vary depending on the emirate. In Dubai, the Dubai Development Authority (DDA) explains that a freelance license allows individuals to do business under their name rather than a brand name. The application process can be completed online or at a customer service center and typically takes two working days to process.

The cost of a freelance license in Dubai includes permit fees, knowledge Dirham, and innovation Dirham. Additionally, there are certain requirements that applicants must meet, such as providing a valid passport copy with a residence visa page, a self-declaration form, and a no-objection certificate from authorities if required based on the Licensing Categories Decision. The process for applying for a freelance license online involves registering on the gofreelance.ae website, filling out a form, uploading the required documents, and paying the fees.

In Abu Dhabi, freelancers are allowed to engage in about 100 activities, including photography, design, gaming consultancy, and AI development. To be eligible for a freelance permit, individuals must have experience in a specific field or have earned academic or professional achievements in that sector. The cost of a freelance license in Abu Dhabi includes various fees such as Ministry of Economy fees, Abu Dhabi Chamber fee, commercial license issuance fee, organization entities fee, registration fee, fees for establishment card, and social contributions.

To apply for a freelance license in Abu Dhabi, individuals can visit the Tamm platform and follow the instructions under the ‘Start a Business’ section. The process typically takes about 10 working days to complete. Overall, freelancing in the UAE offers a lucrative opportunity for individuals looking to monetize their skills and expertise. With the right license and qualifications, freelancers can tap into a diverse range of projects and clients, making it a viable career option in the modern workforce landscape.
