UAE astronomers have captured stunning images of the Tulip Nebula, showcasing its distinct shape that resembles a flower. Located in the Cygnus constellation, the emission nebula is 6,000 light years away from Earth and is mainly composed of hydrogen gas, with traces of oxygen and sulphur. The Al-Khatem Astronomical Observatory in Abu Dhabi shared the main image of the nebula and its enlarged sections on social media, explaining that the gas is ionized by ultraviolet radiation from surrounding stars, giving it a colorful appearance of green, blue, and red.

The images show a blue bubble resulting from ionization by a bright star at the top right of the centre of the image, with some dark nebulae made of dust visible in the enlarged sections. Special processing techniques were used to highlight the oxygen gas in blue, showcasing the intricate details of the Tulip Nebula. The images were captured using the 14-inch Al Khatem Observatory main telescope in the Abu Dhabi desert, with a total exposure of about 12 hours involving 236 images taken with hydrogen, oxygen, and sulphur filters.

The Tulip Nebula is known for its striking appearance and intricate details, making it a popular subject for astronomers and space enthusiasts. The unique shape of the nebula and the vibrant colors captured in the images offer a glimpse into the beauty of our universe. The Al-Khatem Astronomical Observatory’s efforts in capturing and sharing these breathtaking images contribute to the understanding and appreciation of celestial phenomena, highlighting the importance of astronomy in expanding our knowledge of the cosmos.
