The Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate is actively involved in overseeing the implementation of the first phase of the ginger cultivation project in the Wilayats of Rakhyut and Dhalkut with support from the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund. This project involves 30 farmers who started cultivating ginger on 3 acres of land in June 2024, with an expected harvest of between 20 and 30 tonnes. The first season of ginger cultivation is set to last for 8 to 9 months until the scheduled harvest in February 2025.

The Director of the Agricultural Development Department at the General Directorate of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate emphasized that the project provides technical support and guidance to farmers throughout the cultivation process. This includes assistance with land preparation, installation of modern irrigation systems, and continuous monitoring from planting to harvesting. The decision to implement this project follows the success of the turmeric cultivation project in Dhofar Governorate, now in its third year.

The project management team is actively working on promoting the ginger crop to the private sector for future purchase and marketing. Subsidized ginger roots are being distributed to farmers as part of the initiative. The main goal of the project is to encourage and motivate farmers to cultivate ginger in the mountainous regions of Dhofar Governorate. Ginger is a crop with additional economic value and offers various health and nutritional benefits, making it in high demand both locally and globally.

Furthermore, the project aims to enhance the economic reliance on ginger cultivation for local productive families in these communities. By creating job opportunities and stability for these families within their homelands, the project seeks to contribute towards the overall development of the region. As a result, this initiative plays a crucial role in improving the livelihoods of farmers and their families by diversifying their agricultural practices and income sources.

Overall, the ginger cultivation project in Dhofar Governorate represents a significant step towards agricultural development and economic growth in the region. By supporting local farmers and providing them with the necessary resources and expertise, the project aims to boost the production of ginger crops and capitalize on the increasing demand for this valuable crop. Through targeted assistance and guidance, the project is poised to make a positive impact on the local economy and create sustainable opportunities for rural communities in Dhofar Governorate.

In conclusion, the collaboration between the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund, and local farmers highlights a collective effort towards promoting agricultural innovation and enhancing food security in the region. The successful implementation of the ginger cultivation project is a testament to the commitment of all stakeholders involved in supporting the growth and development of agriculture in Dhofar Governorate.
