The Minister of Environment and Climate Change in Qatar, H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, recently attended a workshop on climate change where he emphasized Qatar’s commitment to reaching a collective international agreement to address climate change. He highlighted Qatar’s efforts in this area, dating back over twenty-five years, including ratifying the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1996 and hosting the COP18 with significant international participation. Dr. Al Subaie also mentioned Qatar’s role in the successful negotiation of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, being one of the first countries to sign it.

Furthermore, the Minister discussed Qatar’s national efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, which include the launch of the National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change, the National Action Plan for Climate Change 2030, and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). These plans are aimed at reducing emissions and adapting to climate change effects while promoting sustainable development in alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030. Dr. Al Subaie stressed the importance of balancing economic growth, social development, and environmental protection in these efforts.

The workshop on climate change, titled “Rising to the Challenge of Climate Change,” was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute. Dr. Al Subaie highlighted Qatar’s international contributions to addressing climate change, such as hosting the Doha Carbon and Energy Forum where experts discussed public policies on climate change, renewable energy, and carbon capture and storage. He reiterated the significance of enhancing awareness about global climate challenges among participants to prepare for upcoming climate change negotiations.

In his remarks, Dr. Al Subaie emphasized the workshop’s role in promoting dialogue and exchanging ideas and experiences to address climate change on a global scale. He underscored Qatar’s humanitarian and international responsibility to tackle climate challenges and implement strategies for sustainable development. The workshop serves as a platform for discussing key issues that will be addressed in future climate change negotiations, fostering collaboration and cooperation among stakeholders in the fight against climate change.

Overall, Qatar’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change reiterated the country’s commitment to combating climate change through international cooperation and national initiatives. The workshop not only showcases Qatar’s efforts in addressing climate change but also provides a forum for sharing knowledge and best practices to enhance global climate resilience. As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change, Qatar remains dedicated to promoting sustainable development and ensuring a greener future for generations to come.
