In the first Test match between England and Sri Lanka at Old Trafford cricket ground in Manchester, north-west England, England had a target of 205 runs to win after dismissing Sri Lanka for 326 in their second innings. Kamindu Mendis played a crucial role for Sri Lanka, scoring 113 runs, his third Test century in just four matches. Despite a shaky start, Mendis combined with Dinesh Chandimal to put up a strong partnership of 117 runs for the seventh wicket. However, Mendis’s dismissal marked the beginning of a collapse for Sri Lanka, as they lost their last four wickets for just 19 runs.

Durham paceman Matthew Potts was a standout performer for England, taking 3-47 in 17.3 overs. Potts was a replacement for England captain Ben Stokes, who was sidelined due to a torn hamstring. The match marked the start of a three-Test series between the two teams, with both looking to make a strong start. With England needing 205 runs to win, the stage was set for an exciting final day of play at Old Trafford.

Despite the collapse in the second innings, Sri Lanka showed resilience and fight throughout the match, with Mendis’s century being a standout performance. The partnership between Mendis and Chandimal gave Sri Lanka hope of setting a challenging target for England to chase. However, England’s bowlers, led by Potts, were able to capitalize on the pressure and take quick wickets to put England in a strong position heading into the final day.

As the match entered its final day, all eyes were on England’s batsmen to chase down the 205-run target set by Sri Lanka. With Stokes sidelined, the responsibility fell on the rest of the batting lineup to deliver a strong performance and secure a victory for their team. The match poised for an exciting finish, with both teams vying for a crucial win in the opening Test of the series.

The Test match between England and Sri Lanka showcased some standout performances from players on both sides, with Mendis’s century and Potts’s bowling figures being the highlights of the match. As the final day approached, the tension and excitement were palpable, with fans eagerly anticipating the outcome of the match. With the series being the first of three Tests, both teams were keen to make a strong start and take an early lead in what promised to be a closely contested contest.

In the end, England chased down the target of 205 runs with relative ease, with Ollie Pope playing a crucial innings to guide his team to victory in the opening Test match. The win gave England the momentum going into the rest of the series, while Sri Lanka would look to bounce back in the upcoming matches. The first Test match at Old Trafford provided plenty of drama and excitement, setting the stage for an enthralling series between the two teams.
