Schools across all emirates resumed after a two-month long summer break, leading to anticipated traffic congestion in school districts and surrounding roads. This congestion is often caused by parents stopping longer in front of schools to drop off or pick up their children. To alleviate these traffic issues, schools have designated parking and crossing zones, along with a skilled security team to manage and direct traffic, ensuring a smooth flow for both parents and students. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also invested in a six-lane highway to ease traffic in school areas, such as the GEMS Founders School in Dubai. Despite these improvements, challenges still arise during peak hours, but school leaders are taking a proactive approach to manage traffic effectively.
School leaders believe in coordinating schedules with other schools along the road to manage traffic effectively. For example, GEMS Founders School meets with other schools on the same route, such as GEMS Al Barsha National School and Dubai Heights Academy, to adjust timings and minimize congestion. By opening gates early and adjusting start and finish times, schools aim to create a smoother traffic flow during peak hours. School buses also play a significant role in reducing traffic congestion as they ensure the safe and timely arrival of children while reducing the number of vehicles on the roads. School leaders emphasize the importance of encouraging students to use the school bus to ease traffic in school areas.
Some institutions have shared handbooks with parents before the start of the school year to ensure a smooth transition. Comprehensive Traffic Management Plans are in place to uphold safety standards for students entering and exiting the school. Dedicated parking and crossing points, along with proficient security teams, help manage traffic effectively. By implementing a staggered approach during the first weeks of school, schools aim to acclimate students to the classroom setting while addressing any traffic issues promptly. Schools also remind families to park and drive safely, encouraging them to walk to school if they live in close proximity.
Overall, the key to managing traffic around school areas lies in coordination, proactive planning, and effective communication with families. By working together with other schools, implementing traffic management plans, and encouraging the use of school buses, schools can alleviate congestion and create a safer environment for students and parents. Through ongoing efforts and collaboration with local authorities, schools can continue to improve traffic flow and ensure a smooth start to the academic year for everyone involved.
