The Saudi Roads General Authority (RGA) has achieved significant progress in the construction of the Safwa-Ras Tanura Bridge project in the Eastern Province. This landmark project, which is 88 percent complete, includes a land bridge and sea bridge with a link road. It is the second largest dual carriageway sea bridge in the Kingdom and adds a new entrance and exit to Ras Tanura Governorate, reducing the distance between Ras Tanura, Dammam, and Qatif. The project, which started in 2020, is expected to be completed by June 2025.

The Safwa – Rahima Sea Bridge will have a length of 702 LM and a 20-meter width dual carriageway with 18 spans, being constructed around 14 meters above sea bed level. The road bridge will have a length of 320 LM and a 16.5-meter width dual carriageway with 11 spans. Once completed, the link road will have a length of 14 km. This project is part of the RGA’s efforts to enhance connectivity between cities and governorates, facilitating the movement of individuals and goods between different regions of the Kingdom, and positioning Saudi Arabia as a global logistics center.

In addition to facilitating movement between regions, the project includes the implementation of asphalt works and the establishment of water drainage channels in Safwa and Ras Tanura Governorates. The RGA has also focused on implementing high-quality and safety standards, including signboards, floor paints, ground markings, warning vibrations, and concrete barriers to ensure smooth traffic flow and enhance road safety. The completion of this project is expected to activate tourism by providing easier access to various tourist destinations in the Eastern Province.

The RGA is committed to continuing to implement vital projects and initiatives to upgrade the roads sector in Saudi Arabia. The authority aims to achieve the objectives of the roads sector strategy, which includes reaching the sixth classification in the Global Road Quality Index by 2030, reducing road deaths to less than five cases per 100,000 people, and covering the road network with traffic safety factors according to the classification of the International Road Assessment Program (IRAP). The RGA also aims to maintain an advanced level of services to the capacity of the road network.

Overall, the Safwa-Ras Tanura Bridge project is a significant infrastructure development that will enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and improve road safety in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The project, with its sea bridge, land bridge, and link road, will contribute to reducing travel distances between key areas and support the Kingdom’s goal of becoming a global logistics center. With a focus on quality and safety standards, the RGA is working towards achieving its objectives of upgrading the roads sector and improving traffic flow in the country. The completion of this project is set to bring numerous benefits to residents and visitors alike, further enhancing the Kingdom’s position as a key player in the region.
