Bahrain is gearing up for the rainy season by implementing new strategies to prevent flooding and protect vulnerable communities in the Capital Governorate. After the severe floods in April that devastated areas such as Sanad, Nuwaidrat, and Sitra, officials are taking proactive measures to address the threats posed by heavy rainfall. The Capital Municipal Council recently held a session to discuss preparations for the rainy season, bringing together various government departments and civil society to collaborate on response plans.

Engineer Saleh Tarrada, Chairman of the Capital Municipal Council, emphasized the importance of creating effective response plans to protect infrastructure and ensure residents’ safety. Dr. Kholoud Al Qattan, Vice Chairperson of the Council, echoed the call for teamwork between authorities and the public to properly manage the challenges of the rainy season. Residents were encouraged to stay informed and take preventive measures to safeguard themselves and their families.

Yusef Al Bannaa from the Ministry of Works highlighted the preparations underway, including a team of 15 staff members, eight inspectors, a fleet of eight tankers, and eight additional pumps on standby. Measures are being taken to address past drainage issues, particularly in areas that experienced the most damage during the previous rainy season. MP Ahmed Al Salloom called for a comprehensive rainwater drainage plan to tackle the issues caused by land reclamation and housing developments.

Budget allocations are in the pipeline for essential projects related to rainwater drainage, as discussions with the Ministry’s undersecretary have taken place. MP Al Salloom stressed the importance of attending Capital Municipal Council meetings to address urgent matters and bring together ministries to better serve the citizens. A national initiative has been launched by the Cabinet to implement a rainwater drainage plan across Bahrain in stages, given the realities of climate change and increased rainfall.

With water scarcity becoming a global issue, the capture of rainwater during the season will provide essential drinking water and assist with other needs. The Capital Municipal Council emphasized the necessity for continuous dialogue to ensure that plans remain relevant in light of changing weather patterns. By involving all stakeholders, they aim to ensure a safe and disruption-free rainy season for all residents in the Capital Governorate.
