The Israeli government has accused UNIFIL, a United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, of acting as a “human shield” for Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded the immediate removal of UNIFIL troops from the region. However, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has condemned Israel’s attacks on UN peacekeeping troops as “completely unacceptable” and stressed the importance of their work. The incident has led to strong condemnation from EU foreign affairs ministers, who expressed their displeasure and called for an investigation.

UNIFIL was established by the United Nations Security Council in 1978 with the mission of restoring peace and security in southern Lebanon, near the Israeli border. The peacekeeping mission comprises 10,000 peacekeepers from 50 nationalities, including 16 EU countries. The latest incident involving Israeli forces forcing their way into one of UNIFIL’s positions, destroying the main gate, and causing mild injuries to soldiers has sparked outrage across the EU. Netanyahu had accused UNIFIL of providing Hezbollah terrorists with human shields, leading to demands for their removal from southern Lebanon.

Borrell emphasized that UNIFIL operates under the direct command of the Security Council, not the Secretary-General, and called on parties to respect the mission’s mandate and ensure the safety of peacekeepers. EU foreign affairs ministers arriving in Luxembourg expressed their dissatisfaction with the attacks on UNIFIL troops and stressed the importance of the mission’s work in maintaining peace and security in the region. They called for an immediate halt to violence directed at UN peacekeepers and for a thorough investigation into the incident involving Israeli forces.

Countries like the Netherlands, Spain, and France expressed their support for UNIFIL’s mission and called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing the need for dialogue and negotiation to resolve conflicts. The European condemnation of Israel’s attacks against UNIFIL highlights the importance of respecting the mandate of UN peacekeeping missions and ensuring the safety of peacekeepers. Austria, a staunch backer of Israel in the EU, also criticized the attacks on UNIFIL troops as “simply unacceptable” and reiterated the need to uphold the mission’s mandate.

The incident involving Israeli forces and UNIFIL in southern Lebanon has raised concerns about the safety and security of peacekeepers in the region. The European Union’s strong condemnation of Israel’s attacks on UNIFIL troops reflects a united front in support of the peacekeeping mission’s mandate and the importance of maintaining peace and security in the region. The EU’s call for an immediate halt to violence directed at UN peacekeepers signals a commitment to upholding international law and ensuring the safety of blue helmets serving in conflict zones. The incident underscores the challenges faced by UN peacekeeping missions in conflict zones and the importance of international support in carrying out their vital work.
