Asthma and allergies are widespread diseases worldwide, including in Arab countries like Qatar, where a recent study revealed that asthma affects about 9% of adults and nearly 20% of children aged 6-14. Dr. Ahmad Yousif Khater, a Family Medicine Specialist, emphasized the importance of chronic disease patients, especially those with asthma and allergies, paying close attention to their health during the summer season. The extreme heat and humidity of summer can exacerbate these conditions, leading to severe complications for vulnerable patients.

Asthma and chest allergies are chronic inflammatory conditions that affect the airways and passages in the lungs, causing breathing difficulties, wheezing, and coughing episodes. These conditions are often triggered by an immune system imbalance that overreacts to common irritants like dust, smoke, and pet dander, leading to the production of antibodies and the release of histamines. Understanding these conditions is crucial for providing patients with essential advice and instructions to minimize asthma attacks and manage their symptoms effectively.

To manage asthma and chest allergies during the summer, patients should follow some general tips provided by Dr. Ahmad. These include staying indoors during extreme heat, maintaining a cool and clean environment at home, using HEPA air filters to purify the air, and cleaning bedding regularly to eliminate dust mites. Patients should also wear protective gear outdoors, stay hydrated, exercise wisely, watch their weight, adopt a healthy lifestyle, quit smoking, reduce stress, and have an emergency plan in place with necessary medications.

For other allergy sufferers, taking antihistamine tablets, using nasal sprays or saline rinses, and undergoing allergy testing through skin prick tests can help identify specific triggers and guide treatment. It is essential for asthma and allergy patients to take proactive steps to manage their conditions, especially during the summer when high temperatures can exacerbate symptoms. By following the advice of healthcare professionals and implementing lifestyle changes, patients can minimize the risk of asthma attacks and allergies, leading to improved overall health and well-being.

In conclusion, asthma and allergies are prevalent conditions that require careful management, especially during the summer season when extreme heat and humidity can worsen symptoms. By understanding the nature of these chronic inflammatory conditions, identifying triggers, and following essential advice for prevention and treatment, patients can effectively manage their asthma and allergies and reduce the risk of severe complications. It is essential for healthcare professionals and patients to work together to develop personalized treatment plans and ensure that necessary precautions are taken to maintain optimal health and quality of life for asthma and allergy patients.
