The Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva recently organized a panel discussion on leveraging sports for conflict resolution and peacebuilding, in collaboration with the ICSS, EAA, and Geneva Peace Week 2024. The event saw participation from diplomatic missions, international organizations, academics, and students, with key speakers emphasizing the power of sports as a universal language to promote peace and understanding. Al Suwaidi highlighted sports’ ability to foster a culture of peace by promoting values such as respect, teamwork, fairness, and justice, crucial for social cohesion and conflict prevention.

The event featured speakers like Al Suwaidi, Fahad Al Sulaiti, Mohammed Al Hanzab, Aziyade Poltier, Massimiliano Montanari, and Honey Thaljieh, discussing the effectiveness of sports-based initiatives in promoting peace, conflict resolution, and stability globally. Al Suwaidi pointed out how Qatars commitment to sports aligns with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030, using major sporting events like the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 to spread values of brotherhood, solidarity, and human rights. Qatars active role in utilizing sports within multilateral diplomacy frameworks was also highlighted, emphasizing the importance of integrating sports into policies and strategies.

One of Qatar’s innovative initiatives, the annual football tournament for the diplomatic community in Geneva, in collaboration with the UN Office in Geneva and Qatari institutions, was praised for its success in achieving diplomatic objectives. The upcoming fourth edition of the tournament in May 2025 coincides with the second anniversary of the International Day of Football, showcasing Qatars dedication to leveraging sports for noble goals like promoting global peace. Speakers at the panel discussion expressed gratitude to Qatar for such initiatives and emphasized the importance of integrating sports into educational programs to promote peace and build trust during and after conflicts.

Challenges facing sports for peace, such as lack of funding, leadership, political support, and partnerships, were highlighted by the speakers, underscoring the need to intensify efforts to build strong partnerships and provide resources for peace-promoting initiatives through sports. They also discussed the role of major sporting events in fostering peace and understanding among nations, citing Qatars successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022 as an example of promoting peace through sport and reflecting values of international cooperation and cultural respect. Geneva Peace Week, a key annual forum on the international peacebuilding calendar, brings together organizations and international partners to share knowledge and practices on various peace-related topics across different contexts and disciplines.
