Riyadh has been named the “Arab Environment Capital” for two years in recognition of its pioneering efforts in environmental preservation and sustainability. This decision was made by the 35th session of the Council of Arab Environment Ministers, which was chaired by Saudi Arabia and concluded in Jeddah. As Riyadh begins its tenure as the Arab Environment Capital, the city will focus on raising environmental awareness, promoting sustainability, and organizing campaigns and projects to enhance the quality of life and the environment. These initiatives are aimed at solidifying Riyadh’s global reputation as a center for environmental action and sustainable development, in alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives.

During the session, the Saudi Green Initiative was honored with the Distinguished Environmental Project Award at the government sector level. This recognition further underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to implementing strategic and sustainable environmental projects. In 2024, Riyadh is set to host a series of significant environmental events, including the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16). This conference will address crucial topics such as advancing the convention’s work, the 2018–2030 Strategic Framework, and addressing challenges related to drought and dust storms. The participation of representatives from 196 parties and various international and regional organizations is expected, making COP16 a key event on both Arab and global platforms.

The designation of Riyadh as the Arab Environment Capital highlights the city’s dedication to environmental protection and sustainable development. The city’s initiatives and activities over the next two years will play a crucial role in raising awareness, promoting sustainability, and enhancing the overall environmental quality in Riyadh. Additionally, hosting major events such as COP16 reflects Riyadh’s commitment to addressing global environmental challenges and contributing to international efforts towards sustainability. This recognition also underscores Saudi Arabia’s leadership in implementing strategic and sustainable environmental projects, showcasing the Kingdom’s proactive role in addressing environmental issues at a regional and global level.

As Riyadh gears up to host a series of significant environmental events throughout 2024, the city is set to become a focal point for discussions on environmental preservation and sustainability. COP16, in particular, is expected to attract participation from a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from governments, international organizations, and regional bodies. Through these events, Riyadh will have the opportunity to showcase its environmental initiatives and share best practices with a global audience, further solidifying its reputation as a leading hub for environmental action in the Arab world and beyond.

By being named the Arab Environment Capital, Riyadh has the opportunity to showcase its environmental efforts and initiatives on a global stage. The city’s commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation is reinforced through hosting events such as COP16, which will bring together key stakeholders to address pressing environmental issues. Additionally, receiving the Distinguished Environmental Project Award for the Saudi Green Initiative highlights the Kingdom’s dedication to implementing strategic and sustainable environmental projects. Riyadh’s initiatives and activities as the Arab Environment Capital will not only benefit the city and its residents but also contribute to the wider goal of promoting environmental awareness and sustainability on a regional and global scale.

Overall, Riyadh’s designation as the Arab Environment Capital signifies the city’s leadership and dedication to environmental preservation and sustainability. Through hosting major events and initiatives, such as COP16 and the Saudi Green Initiative, Riyadh will have the opportunity to showcase its environmental efforts and contribute to global discussions on sustainability. These activities will not only enhance Riyadh’s reputation as a center for environmental action but also underline Saudi Arabia’s commitment to implementing strategic and sustainable environmental projects. Riyadh’s tenure as the Arab Environment Capital is set to be a transformative period for the city, as it continues to lead the way in environmental preservation and sustainability efforts.
