The Doha Wireless Warriors (DWW), a dragon boat team made up of cancer survivors, achieved success at the 2nd International Dragon Boat Regatta in Cyprus. Securing gold in the 200-meter small boat “cancer race”, the team surpassed local competitors by four strokes. Alongside DWW, another Doha-based corporate team won five medals, including two golds, while the Doha Dragons attained silver in the 500-meter standard mixed boat event.

Around 50 members from the three Doha-based dragon boat teams journeyed to Cyprus for the competition, participating in collaboration events along the way. Sharing the experience with competitors from South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, Syria, and Qatar, the local Cypriot teams were welcoming. DWW founder Sandee Thompson emphasized the camaraderie among the teams and discussed the significance of the flower ceremony, a cherished tradition in the dragon boat community.

During the flower ceremony, Doha Wireless Warriors and Cyprus Pink Mouflons united in remembrance and support. Teams paddled alongside each other, honoring lost loved ones by tossing roses into the water. Following the ceremony, an archway of paddles was formed, allowing survivors to walk through in celebration of life and solidarity. The event concluded with a dinner, dance, and awards ceremony, showcasing the spirit of community and competition.

The regatta spanned over the weekend, with the 200-meter races on Saturday and the 500-meter events on Sunday. DWW’s founder, Sandee Thompson, highlighted the team’s dedication to raising awareness about breast cancer through their participation in cancer race events. After the final race, the team held a medal ceremony for the cancer races to accommodate members returning to commitments in Doha, reflecting on their achievements and looking forward to upcoming training and competitions.

Continuing their mission to inspire and educate, DWW focuses on local and international races to promote the health benefits of dragon boating and raise awareness about breast cancer. With a commitment to awareness and advocacy, the team strives to make a positive impact through their participation in dragon boat competitions. Their success in Cyprus is a testament to their dedication, camaraderie, and determination to overcome challenges and inspire others.
