Omani Women’s Day holds a special significance for Amira Al Lawati, the Director General of Tourism Development at the Ministry of Heritage & Tourism. Reflecting on her career journey, Al Lawati started in finance but transitioned to the Tourism sector after working at Al Bustan Palace Hotel. She furthered her education in Tourism Planning and Development with a master’s degree in the UK and completed the National Leadership & Competitive Program. With a focus on sustainable growth and cultural heritage preservation, Al Lawati aims to create a comprehensive visitor experience that highlights Oman’s unique offerings.

Currently, Al Lawati is dedicated to developing Adventure Tourism initiatives that allow visitors to engage with Oman’s natural landscapes firsthand. From hiking in the Hajar Mountains to diving in the beautiful waters, these experiences not only attract thrill-seekers but also promote a deeper appreciation for the environment. Additionally, the Ministry is focusing on Omani culinary arts to showcase the country’s unique flavors, ingredients, and cultural stories. Women in Oman are increasingly involved in roles as chefs, restaurateurs, and food entrepreneurs, bringing a modern twist to traditional dishes.

Over the last two decades, Al Lawati has witnessed significant changes in the Tourism sector, including the establishment of the Ministry of Tourism in 2004 and its integration into the Ministry of Heritage & Tourism in 2020. The sector has contributed significantly to Oman’s economy, employing over 179,000 people and supporting SMEs. Al Lawati acknowledges the growth of women in the industry and looks forward to more women taking on senior managerial roles, emphasizing the Ministry’s efforts to improve gender ratios.

The Ministry of Heritage & Tourism collaborates with educational institutions to promote career opportunities for women in Tourism and Hospitality. Partnering with Sultan Qaboos University and Oman Tourism College, the Ministry supports academic programs and specialized training for tour guides. Through internships and mentorship programs, young women are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for success in the sector. These initiatives have made Tourism and Hospitality more appealing and accessible to women, offering clear career pathways from education to employment.

For Al Lawati, Omani Women’s Day is a celebration of the strength, resilience, and contributions of Omani women, past and present. It symbolizes the progress and unity of women in Oman while serving as a reminder of the support women receive from the country’s leadership, particularly from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. With a sense of responsibility to continue pushing boundaries for women’s empowerment, Al Lawati remains committed to opening doors for future generations of women in Oman.
