Hezbollah has launched a deadly drone attack on an Israeli army base in central Israel, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers and severe injuries to around 60 others. This attack is the deadliest strike by the militant group on Israeli territory since the IDF’s ground operation into Lebanon nearly two weeks ago. The impact of the drone strike caused serious injuries that required life-saving medical treatment, with the injured quickly evacuated to hospitals. Hezbollah stated that the attack was retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut that killed 22 people and targeted Israel’s elite Golani brigade by launching dozens of missiles.
The missile barrage set off air raid sirens in the city of Haifa, further north of the attack location. Despite Israel’s advanced air-defense systems, the large number of injuries caused by drones or missiles is rare. The United States announced on the same day as the attack that it would be sending a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and troops to Israel. This move prompted Iran to warn the U.S. to keep American military forces out of Israel. Hezbollah, aligned with the Gaza-based Hamas militant group, has been actively firing at Israel since October last year in support of the Palestinians, resulting in displacements and casualties on both sides of the border.
The ongoing conflict has seen Israel conducting heavy strikes into parts of Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, and launching a ground offensive involving an estimated 15,000 Israeli soldiers operating in the country. In response, Hezbollah has expanded its rocket fire to more populated areas deep inside Israel, disrupting daily life and causing some casualties. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported over 1,400 deaths in the country since September, though it does not specify how many were Hezbollah fighters. On the Israeli side, at least 58 people have been killed in rocket attacks, with nearly half of them being soldiers.
Hezbollah’s drone attack on the Israeli army base has raised tensions in an already volatile region, with casualties on both sides escalating as the conflict persists. The group’s retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut underscores the ongoing cycle of violence and retaliation in the region, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. The U.S.’s decision to send troops and defense systems to Israel further complicates the situation, prompting warnings from Iran against American military presence in the area. As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community faces the challenge of finding a resolution to the crisis and preventing further loss of life and destruction in the region.
