Oman Human Rights Commission takes part in meeting in Jordan

The Oman Human Rights Commission delegation, led by Saud bin Saleh Al-Mawali, participated in a Roundtable Dialogue on the United Nations Common Position on Detention in Jordan. The focus of the meeting was on discussing overcrowding in jails and the reduction of detention centers in the Middle East and North Africa region. The event was organized by the Regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the Middle East and North Africa in partnership with the International Organization for Penal Reform and the Public Security Directorate in Jordan. The dialogue sessions included a review of the United Nations system’s common position on detention and the impact of overcrowding in prisons on human rights.

Abdulaziz bin Ali Al-Saadi, the Director of the Legal Affairs Department of the Oman Human Rights Commission, was also part of the delegation. The discussions at the roundtable focused on presenting the experiences of various states in dealing with overcrowding in prisons and highlighting the role of different parties in addressing this issue. Proposed solutions for the promotion of human rights in detention centers were also put forward during the dialogue sessions. The event provided an opportunity for different stakeholders to come together and exchange ideas on how to improve the conditions of detention in the region.

The Roundtable Dialogue on the United Nations Common Position on Detention in Jordan served as a platform for sharing best practices and experiences in addressing overcrowding in jails. The event brought together representatives from the Oman Human Rights Commission, the Regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the Middle East and North Africa, the International Organization for Penal Reform, and the Public Security Directorate in Jordan. By discussing the impact of overcrowding in prisons on human rights, the participants aimed to find effective solutions to ensure the protection and promotion of human rights in detention centers in the region.

One of the key issues discussed during the dialogue sessions was the need to reduce the number of detainees in overcrowded jails in the Middle East and North Africa region.
