Heads of schools in the UAE are alarmed by a recent case involving a British teacher who accepted bribes from students in exchange for altering their exam results. The teacher was sentenced to three years in prison, Dh5,000 fine, and deportation, sparking discussions about the importance of ethical conduct in educational institutions. Zubair Ahmad, COO of Springdales School in Dubai, emphasized the need for integrity and values alongside academic excellence. He stressed the importance of implementing comprehensive training on ethical conduct and conducting regular evaluations and background checks on teachers to prevent misconduct.

Ahmad mentioned that at their school, they have strict measures in place to address such issues, including making it mandatory for teachers to sign an ethical code of conduct and conducting thorough background checks. They also have a comprehensive employee safeguarding declaration policy focused on protecting children and ensuring the safety of the entire school community. Support systems such as mentorship programs, counseling, and conflict resolution teams are crucial in helping teachers uphold professionalism and navigate challenges.

Abhilasha Singh, Principal of Shining Star International School in Abu Dhabi, highlighted the significance of work ethics in preventing such incidents. She mentioned that their school has a good conduct policy that includes an ethical work element to guide teachers to live by a moral code. Individuals involved in bribery in the private sector could face a fine, confiscation of the benefit, and imprisonment. French expat, Marie Dubois, emphasized the importance of ethics in educational institutions and suggested implementing clear policies, auditing grading procedures, regular staff training on integrity, and an anonymous reporting mechanism.

Overall, the recent case of a teacher accepting bribes in exchange for altering exam results in the UAE has prompted concerns among school heads about the need for greater emphasis on ethical conduct and transparency within educational institutions. The incident highlights the importance of prioritizing integrity and values alongside academic excellence to maintain a professional and ethical learning environment for students. Implementing comprehensive training on ethical conduct and conducting regular evaluations and background checks on teachers are essential measures to prevent and address incidents of misconduct.

Schools like Springdales School in Dubai have strict measures in place, including a mandatory ethical code of conduct for teachers and a comprehensive employee safeguarding declaration policy focusing on protecting children and ensuring the safety of the school community. Support systems such as mentorship programs and counseling are crucial in helping teachers navigate challenges and uphold professionalism. Work ethics, as emphasized by Abhilasha Singh of Shining Star International School, play a vital role in preventing incidents of bribery and misconduct among teachers.

Individuals involved in bribery could face fines, confiscation of benefits, and imprisonment, as stated by the law in the UAE. Parents and members of the community, like Marie Dubois, stress the importance of clear policies, auditing grading procedures, regular staff training on integrity, and an anonymous reporting mechanism to prevent future incidents of misconduct. By reinforcing a culture of accountability and integrity within educational institutions and providing support systems for teachers, schools can create a safe and ethical learning environment for all students.
