Gawad eliminates Al Tamimi from Qatar Classic; Gohar advances to quarterfinals

The 2024 Q-Terminals Qatar Classic saw home hero Abdullah Al Tamimi’s journey come to an end as he went down fighting to former world champion Karim Abdel Gawad. The Egyptian player got the better of Al Tamimi in a closely contested match, winning 3-1. Despite the loss, Al Tamimi’s fighting spirit was praised by Gawad, who acknowledged the support of the Qatari crowd.

Gawad, the 2016 Qatar Classic champion, will now face World No. 2 Mostafa Asal in the quarter-finals. Asal, who is in good form and has won the last two tournaments, defeated World Junior Champion Mohamad Zakaria to advance. Asal praised Zakaria’s talent and maturity, emphasizing Egypt’s dominance in squash.

Egyptian players have been dominating the tournament, with five out of the eight men lined up in the quarter-finals being Egyptians. Along with top seed Ali Farag and World No. 7 Tarek Momen, Fares Desouky also advanced to the quarter-finals after overcoming a tricky start. In the women’s competition, two more Egyptians, including World No. 2 Nouran Gohar, advanced to the quarter-final stage.

The men’s and women’s quarter-final line-ups are filled with talented players from Egypt and other countries. The competition has been intense, with players showcasing their skills and fighting for a spot in the semi-finals. The Q-Terminals Qatar Classic has been a display of top-class squash, with players giving their all on the court to secure victory.
