The Saudi Theatre and Performing Arts Authority recently honored Qatari playwright Saleh Al Mannai and several other GCC theatre stars at the 14th session of the Gulf Cooperation Council National Theatre Groups Festival in Riyadh. This recognition was given in acknowledgment of their significant contributions to the enrichment of the GCC theatre movement, the creation of elite works, and the inspiration of future generations of theatre enthusiasts. Al Mannai expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating that it held special meaning for him, especially as it took place in Saudi Arabia during a festival being held in the Kingdom for the first time. He dedicated the award to all Qatari artists, viewing it as a form of encouragement and recognition of his lengthy service in the theatre.

The hosting of the GCC Theatre Festival in Saudi Arabia for the first time represents a milestone in the efforts of the Theatre and Performing Arts Authority to enhance collaboration, support major theatrical events on a regional and international scale, and promote the development of theatrical production and creativity. The festival kicked off on September 10 in Riyadh, with the State of Qatar participating in the event. The Qatari delegation, led by Director of the Theatre Affairs Center at the Ministry of Culture Abdulrahim Al-Siddiqi, has set up a special pavilion showcasing theatrical publications and screening a wide selection of Qatari plays spanning over 50 years.

As a well-respected playwright in the region, Saleh Al Mannai has played a crucial role in shaping the landscape of theatre in Qatar and the larger GCC. His dedication to the craft and his ability to inspire others have earned him the admiration of his peers and the recognition of industry leaders. The honor bestowed upon him serves as a testament to his hard work and commitment to his art over the years. Al Mannai’s words of appreciation for the award reflect his humility and his desire to share the recognition with his fellow Qatari artists, highlighting the importance of collaboration and support within the artistic community.

The GCC Theatre Festival represents an important platform for artists and theatre groups from across the Gulf region to come together, showcase their talents, and exchange ideas. By hosting the festival in Riyadh, the Saudi Theatre and Performing Arts Authority has demonstrated its commitment to promoting cultural exchange and fostering a vibrant artistic community in the region. The participation of the State of Qatar in the festival further strengthens the bonds of friendship and collaboration between GCC countries, as well as highlighting the rich theatrical traditions and heritage of Qatar.

As the festival continues until September 17, attendees can look forward to a diverse program featuring performances, workshops, and other activities that celebrate the art of theatre. With the support of organizations like the Theatre and Performing Arts Authority, artists like Saleh Al Mannai can continue to make a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of the GCC. The recognition and appreciation shown to these talented individuals are a reminder of the importance of the arts in bringing people together, inspiring creativity, and fostering a sense of community. As the festival draws to a close, participants can reflect on the shared experiences and connections forged during this celebration of theatre in the Gulf region.
