The ongoing Test match between Afghanistan and New Zealand has been stalled for the second day due to rain and poor ground conditions. Ground staff have resorted to using electric fans to dry the pitch at the Greater Noida ground near New Delhi. The Test was supposed to start on Monday but has been delayed due to the inclement weather. In anticipation of more rain, groundsmen have used tarps to cover areas of the pitch and are actively working to fill wet patches with dry soil and fresh turf.
Despite the efforts of the ground staff, the outfield remains soaked after days of heavy rain during the monsoon season. The drainage at the Greater Noida ground is reported to be basic, further complicating the situation. Umpires are scheduled to hold an inspection at 3:00 pm to determine a potential start time for the match. The Times of India has described the ground as “ill-equipped” for hosting the Test match, raising concerns about the conditions.
The New Zealand players have been waiting out the delays by throwing rugby balls around, while both teams have been restricted to their hotels as they await updates on the match schedule. Afghanistan has hosted several T20 and one-day internationals at the Greater Noida ground since 2017. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has offered alternative venues for Afghanistan to train and host matches outside their country, including Lucknow and Dehradun.
However, the preferred options for this Test were unavailable due to local league matches taking place at those grounds. The press box at Greater Noida initially lacked basic amenities like internet and power, prompting complaints and subsequent relocation. Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) officials have expressed disappointment with the situation while being cautious about criticizing the venue to maintain relations with the BCCI.
An ACB official was quoted as saying that the current situation is a “huge mess” and vowed not to return for future matches. This Test match marks only the 10th Test appearance for Afghanistan. There has been no public reaction from the New Zealand side led by Tim Southee, who will be traveling to Sri Lanka for two Tests before heading back for a series against India. Despite the challenges faced at the Greater Noida ground, the teams are hopeful for a potential start to the Test match once the ground conditions improve.
