GAFT leads Saudi negotiating team in first round of GCC-Indonesia free trade talks

The General Authority for Foreign Trade (GAFT) from Saudi Arabia, represented by Deputy Governor of International Organizations and Agreements, Farid Al-Asali, recently led a team to participate in the first round of negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement between the GCC countries and Indonesia in Jakarta. The Saudi team is responsible for overseeing and monitoring the progress of the negotiations to ensure they align with Saudi Arabia’s trade objectives and policies. They also actively participate in the negotiations to present the country’s negotiating positions. The Saudi delegation is composed of 9 technical teams covering various aspects such as goods, services, investment, and intellectual property, among others. These teams, which include 46 government agencies, collaborate to prepare and coordinate Saudi Arabia’s negotiating positions and proposals in international trade agreements.

Trade between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia in 2023 amounted to approximately $7 billion. Mineral products and organic chemicals were the main exports from Saudi Arabia to Indonesia, while cars, parts, and animal or vegetable oils were the most significant Indonesian imports into the country. The Foreign Trade Authority (GAFT) aims to enhance Saudi Arabia’s international trade gains, increase its presence on the global stage, and participate effectively in various international organizations to achieve common goals and sustainable development. By actively engaging in trade negotiations and agreements, Saudi Arabia seeks to expand its economic opportunities and strengthen its position in the global market.

The Saudi delegation in the negotiations with Indonesia consists of technical teams focusing on different aspects of the proposed Free Trade Agreement. These teams work together to ensure that Saudi Arabia’s interests and priorities are reflected in the negotiations, and that the final agreement aligns with the country’s trade objectives and policies.
