Indian javelin thrower Sumit Antil made history by becoming the first Indian male to successfully defend their Paralympics title. The Indian contingent at the Paris Paralympics concluded their campaign with a record-breaking 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze, marking the most successful performance in the country’s history. This achievement surpassed their previous success at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics where they secured 19 medals.

Neeraj Chopra, another renowned Indian javelin thrower, took to social media to congratulate the Indian contingent for their outstanding performance at the Paris Paralympics. The entire nation is proud of the athletes who competed and brought home a total of 29 medals. This remarkable feat helped India cross the 50-medal mark in the history of the competition, with 84 para-athletes representing the nation in 12 disciplines, including new sports like paracycling, para rowing, and blind judo.

During the Paralympic Games, India achieved several firsts and set new records. Para-shooter Avani Lekhara became the first Indian woman to win two Paralympic gold medals, securing her title in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 shooting event with a world record score. In para-athletics, India recorded its first-ever one-two finish in the men’s club throw F51 event with Dharambir and Parnav Soorma winning gold and silver, respectively. Dharambir also set an Asian record.

India also celebrated its first-ever archery champion in both the Olympics and Paralympics, as Harvinder Singh clinched gold in the individual recurve para-archery event. Sumit Antil, an Indian javelin throw ace, repeated his success from Tokyo 2020 by winning back-to-back gold medals in the F64 event with a Paralympic record-breaking throw of 70.59 m. He surpassed his own previous record multiple times during the competition.

The Indian Paralympic contingent’s remarkable performance at the Paris Paralympics has garnered praise from athletes, fans, and sports enthusiasts across the country. With a total of 29 medals, India surpassed its previous achievements and established new milestones at the global sporting event. The success of Indian para-athletes in various disciplines demonstrates the nation’s growing prowess and dedication to para sports, setting a new standard for future competitions. India’s participation in new sports and record-breaking performances have elevated the country’s standing in the Paralympic community.

Neeraj Chopra’s words of encouragement and appreciation for the Indian contingent reflect the unity and support within the sports community. The achievements of para-athletes like Avani Lekhara, Dharambir, Parnav Soorma, Harvinder Singh, and Sumit Antil have inspired aspiring athletes and showcased the immense talent and determination present in Indian sports. With a focus on inclusivity and excellence, India is poised to continue making significant strides in the world of para sports and further elevate its position on the global stage.
