The case of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who has been detained in Nigeria since February, has raised concerns about human rights violations and the rule of law. Gambaryan recently submitted a new bail application on medical grounds, citing health conditions including a herniated disc, pneumonia, malaria, and tonsillitis. However, Nigerian authorities have opposed the application, claiming that Gambaryan is not unwell despite the evidence presented.

Gambaryan’s detention came after Nigerian authorities accused Binance of devaluing the naira and facilitating illegal financial transactions. The court rejected his initial bail application in May, and he has been held in Kuje prison since then. His family and Binance officials have called for his release on humanitarian grounds to receive proper medical treatment in the US. The situation has attracted international attention and calls for the US government to intervene.

During a recent court appearance, Gambaryan was denied access to a wheelchair and forced to walk with crutches, despite showing signs of extreme pain and distress. His lawyers have also faced difficulties in meeting him to prepare for his trial. The prosecution has claimed that Gambaryan is declining medical treatment, but key medical records, such as an MRI scan, are missing from his file. The judge has scheduled a hearing for the bail application and trial continuation on September 4.

Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, has urged the US government to take action to free her husband, stating that he is at risk of permanent damage due to the lack of proper medical care in prison. She criticized Nigerian authorities for withholding medical records and playing games with his life, describing the situation as inhumane and degrading. The family is seeking accountability for the disregard of law and human rights in Gambaryan’s case.

The ordeal faced by Tigran Gambaryan highlights the challenges of navigating legal systems in foreign countries, particularly in cases involving cryptocurrency businesses. The Nigerian government’s crackdown on crypto exchanges has sparked concerns about the treatment of individuals associated with these entities. The case also raises questions about the protection of human rights and access to fair trials in such situations.

As the trial continues and international pressure mounts for Gambaryan’s release, the importance of upholding legal standards and respecting human rights remains at the forefront. The ongoing developments in this case serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in international legal proceedings and the need for transparency and accountability in addressing allegations of financial wrongdoing. It is crucial for stakeholders to monitor the situation closely and advocate for a fair and just resolution for all parties involved.
