Hollywood star Nicole Kidman made a triumphant return to the Venice Film Festival after almost two decades. Her film Babygirl premiered at the festival and received a standing ovation from the audience at the Sala Grande, lasting over seven minutes. Kidman was joined by her fellow cast members Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde, and filmmaker Halina Reijn for the premiere. The film centres around Kidman’s character, a high-powered CEO who compromises her family and career for a passionate affair with her much younger intern. A24 will showcase the film at The Toronto International Film Festival before its release in the US on Christmas Day.

Kidman expressed her excitement about working with Reijn on the film, describing it as a “freeing” experience. She emphasized that the movie explores themes of desire, inner thoughts, secrets, marriage, truth, power, and consent. Kidman highlighted that the story is told from a female perspective, which she found empowering and unique. The collaboration with Reijn allowed her to delve into deep and liberating aspects of the character and story. Kidman’s portrayal of the lead character in Babygirl promises to offer a fresh and compelling narrative that challenges traditional storytelling norms.

The Venice press corps had the opportunity to hear Kidman’s insights on her role in the film and the themes it explores. Kidman shared that the film delves into the complexities of desire and relationships, shedding light on the inner workings of the characters’ minds. She emphasized the importance of portraying a woman’s story through a female lens, highlighting the authenticity and depth it brings to the narrative. Kidman’s involvement in Babygirl marks a significant departure from her previous roles, showcasing her versatility and willingness to engage with challenging and thought-provoking content.

The enthusiastic reception of Babygirl at the Venice Film Festival suggests that the film resonates with audiences on a deeper level. The exploration of female desire, power dynamics, and personal liberation strikes a chord with viewers seeking multidimensional and engaging storytelling. Kidman’s performance has garnered praise for its complexity and emotional depth, further solidifying her status as a leading actress in Hollywood. The collaboration between Kidman, Reijn, and the rest of the cast and crew has resulted in a film that challenges conventions and offers a fresh perspective on contemporary themes.

As the film continues its journey to The Toronto International Film Festival and subsequent release in the US, the anticipation and buzz surrounding Babygirl are expected to grow. Audiences eager to experience a captivating and thought-provoking cinematic experience have something to look forward to with Kidman’s latest project. The film’s exploration of universal themes through a unique and empowering lens promises to spark conversations and resonate with viewers on a personal level. Kidman’s return to the Venice Film Festival and her compelling performance in Babygirl signal a new chapter in her illustrious career, one that embraces bold and innovative storytelling.
