The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism recently concluded the ‘Omani Culinary Arts Festival,’ the first event of its kind in Oman. Taking place from August 22 to 26 at Al Haffa Beach in Salalah, the festival coincided with the activities of the 2024 Dhofar Khareef season. Over five days, the festival hosted live cooking demonstrations by skilled Omani and GCC chefs, panel discussions on innovation in Omani cuisine, and various activities that attracted over 50,000 visitors from both within and outside the Sultanate.

The diverse activities included demonstrations by chefs such as Lulwa Altaanak, Nader Al Aisari, and Ahmed Al Saadi, as well as participation from the Oman Tourism College, photographer Haitham Al Farsi, and several entrepreneurs. The festival also featured sections such as the Little Chef’s Corner, traditional music folklore performances, competitions, the Farmers Corner, restaurants offering authentic Omani cuisine, and a Souvenir Corner with products from over 34 local SMEs. The Ministry emphasized enhancing local content through contracts, purchases, and supply chains.

The primary objective of the Festival was to promote and enhance culinary tourism, specifically focusing on Omani culinary arts and cuisine at local, regional, and global levels. The event is part of the ‘Food Tourism and Omani Culinary Arts’ programme, which aims to introduce Omani cuisine as a means to achieve economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Through showcasing Omani culinary arts, the Programme seeks to position them on the cultural tourism map and provide opportunities for local communities and SMEs in the culinary arts sector.

The programme also aims to document the heritage and history of Omani cuisine, ensuring its preservation and sustainability while adapting recipes and menus to suit the evolving tastes of tourists. Maintaining essential ingredients and fostering innovation in supply chains are key strategies to enhance competitiveness. Additionally, the programme aims to benefit local communities, develop entrepreneurial opportunities in manufacturing, services, and tourism products, and create unique culinary experiences for visitors.

In conclusion, the ‘Omani Culinary Arts Festival’ was a success in promoting Omani cuisine and culinary arts, attracting a diverse audience and showcasing the talents of local and GCC chefs. By emphasizing innovation in Omani cuisine, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is actively working towards economic, social, and environmental sustainability while preserving the traditions and heritage associated with Omani culinary arts. The festival serves as a platform to introduce Omani cuisine to a wider audience and create opportunities for local communities and SMEs in the culinary tourism sector.
