Aleah Finnegan, a Filipino American gymnast, was part of a group that missed out on the US Olympic trials three years ago. She believed her elite gymnastics career was over until an opportunity to represent the Philippines arose. Alongside Emma Malabuyo and Levi Jung-Ruivivar, they qualified for the Paris Games, hoping to grow the sport in the Philippines. They will be the first Filipino women’s gymnastics representatives at the Olympics since 1964.

Before the start of the competition, Finnegan was emotional, reflecting on her journey back to elite gymnastics after her disappointment at missing out on the US team. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Philippines and vowed to do her best. The trio of Filipino American gymnasts have known each other for years and are experiencing the Olympics together, forming a strong bond as they navigate the challenges and experiences of the Games.

Malabuyo, Jung-Ruivivar, and Finnegan all reached the highest level of gymnastics in the US but fell short of making the national team for major competitions. They found a renewed passion and drive for the sport when the opportunity to represent the Philippines arose. Despite the challenges and setbacks, they persevered and earned their spots at the Paris Olympics, showcasing their dedication and determination.

Malabuyo came close to making the US team in 2021 but ultimately fell short. She embraced the opportunity to compete for the Philippines at the Asian Championships, where she secured her Olympic berth. Jung-Ruivivar also seized her chance, competing in the World Cup series and earning her spot on the team. With their diverse paths to qualification, the trio is ready to represent their heritage on the world stage.

As they navigate the Olympics, Finnegan, Malabuyo, and Jung-Ruivivar are savoring each moment and bonding over shared experiences. From baking bread with other athletes in the Olympic Village to trading pins and recording TikToks, they are making the most of their time in Paris. The support and camaraderie they have for each other are evident as they face the challenges and pressures of Olympic competition.

While they may not be favored to win medals, these Filipino American gymnasts are focused on the journey and the impact they can have on the sport in the Philippines. They hope to inspire young gymnasts in their homeland and pave the way for future generations to dream big. With their resilience, perseverance, and unity, Finnegan, Malabuyo, and Jung-Ruivivar are shining examples of athletes who have overcome obstacles to achieve their Olympic dreams.
