The Kingdom of Bahrain recently emphasized the importance of parties involved in armed conflicts complying with international law to protect civilians. This was highlighted in a speech delivered by the Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al-Ruwaie. The focus was on the need for adherence to international humanitarian law and human rights law to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians in conflict zones. The speech took place during an open discussion session in the Security Council, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1265 (1999) and the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions.
During the speech, the Permanent Representative also highlighted the success of the thirty-third session of the Council of the League of Arab States that was hosted by Bahrain earlier this year. The initiatives proposed by Bahrain were adopted in the Bahrain Declaration, including a call for an international peace conference in the Middle East to address the Palestinian issue and support for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations. Additionally, the declaration focused on providing health and educational services to those affected by conflicts in the region, with the aim of creating a stable environment for all Middle Eastern peoples.
Specifically addressing the situation in the Gaza Strip, the Bahrain summit issued a statement condemning the Israeli attack on the Rafah crossing and the resulting humanitarian crisis. The statement called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, an end to forced displacements, and the lifting of the siege to allow for sustainable access to humanitarian aid. The control of the Israeli occupation forces on the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing was also highlighted as a concern to tighten the siege on civilians and hinder the flow of aid.
The Permanent Representative emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to protect civilians and minimize the impact of armed conflicts on their lives. This includes implementing preventive measures to ensure the safety, security, and dignity of civilians during conflicts, in line with global aspirations for peace, stability, and development. The Kingdom of Bahrain’s stance on ensuring compliance with international laws and promoting the welfare of civilians in conflict zones reflects the country’s commitment to upholding human rights and humanitarian standards on the international stage.
As the world continues to face numerous conflicts and humanitarian crises, the role of countries like Bahrain in advocating for the protection of civilians and adherence to international law becomes increasingly crucial. By calling for comprehensive approaches that consider the complexities and accumulations of damage in conflict zones, Bahrain sets an example for other nations to follow in promoting peace, stability, and the well-being of all people, regardless of their circumstances. The Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian causes and global peace is evident in its actions and statements within the international community, signaling its dedication to upholding human rights and promoting a safer world for all.
