Bullying is a major issue that affects many individuals, including children. A recent incident involving an Emirati girl who was admitted to the ICU after being relentlessly bullied has sparked outrage and concern. The girl, Maryam Al Shehhi, was participating in a children’s design competition show sponsored by a major international fashion retailer. During the filming process, she was singled out and ridiculed by the crew and other participants, leading to further bullying after the programme aired.

Maryam, who is known for her outstanding academic performance and high grades, was subjected to insults and ridicule from her friends and classmates after the show aired. The situation became too much for her to handle, and she was hospitalized for over a week. Her family decided to keep her away from social media and enrolled her in distance learning to protect her from further harm.

The incident has sparked a wave of criticism from UAE citizens and residents, prompting the Emirates Media Council to take action. The group involved in the programme issued an official apology to the UAE community and Maryam’s family, acknowledging the inappropriate remarks and promising to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Director-General of the Child Safety Department emphasized the importance of parents being cautious when choosing programmes for their children and monitoring their online activities to prevent cyberbullying and other harmful behaviors.

The family member of the girl shared how distressing the filming experience was for Maryam, and how she was subjected to bullying and insults from the crew and other participants. Despite her efforts to remain strong, the relentless bullying took a toll on her physical and emotional well-being, leading to her hospitalization. The family’s decision to speak out about the incident highlights the need for greater awareness and action to prevent bullying and protect children from harm.

Maryam’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for children to thrive and pursue their passions. Parents play a critical role in recognizing their children’s talents and guiding them in the right direction. By monitoring their children’s activities and ensuring they are engaged in positive and uplifting programs, parents can help prevent incidents of bullying and ensure their children’s well-being.

The apology issued by the group involved in the programme reflects a commitment to accountability and a willingness to address the harm caused to Maryam and her family. Moving forward, it is essential for all stakeholders, including parents, educators, and media organizations, to work together to create a culture of respect and support for children. By promoting kindness and understanding, we can create a safer and more inclusive environment for all children to thrive and reach their full potential.
