Qatar has officially been designated as the 42nd member of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), making it the first Gulf country to enter the program. This decision comes after Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken commended Qatar for meeting the stringent security requirements necessary to join the VWP. The collaboration and information sharing inherent in the VWP will enhance the security interests of the United States while also promoting legitimate travel and commerce between the two nations.

According to Secretary Mayorkas, Qatar has been an exceptional partner for the United States, and their strategic relationship has continued to strengthen over the years. By meeting the requirements of the VWP, Qatar has demonstrated its commitment to security and stability, paving the way for other partners to join the program as well. Secretary Blinken also expressed his confidence that Qatar’s participation in the VWP will deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries and facilitate safer, more secure, and easier travel for both Americans and Qataris.

The VWP plays a crucial role in building comprehensive security partnerships between the United States and designated countries that meet strict requirements related to counterterrorism, law enforcement, immigration enforcement, document security, and border management. Qatar has put forth a significant effort to meet all program requirements, including entering into partnerships with the United States to share information on terrorism and serious crimes. As a member of the VWP, Qatar citizens and nationals will be able to apply for authorization to travel to the United States through the ESTA online or mobile app.

Starting no later than December 1, 2024, citizens and nationals of Qatar will be able to apply for authorization to travel to the United States for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without first obtaining a US visa. These authorizations are generally valid for two years, providing more flexibility for travelers. Additionally, US citizens will benefit from an extension of their stay in Qatar from 30 days to 90 days, starting from October 1, 2024. These developments aim to facilitate smoother travel experiences for both Qataris and Americans.

As a member of the VWP, Qatar will undergo regular reviews to ensure continued compliance with all program requirements. This ongoing monitoring is essential to maintaining the security and integrity of the program. More information on the VWP, including the application process and requirements, can be found on the Department of Homeland Security’s website. Qatar’s admission to the VWP marks a significant milestone in the partnership between the two countries, promoting security, stability, and enhanced travel opportunities for citizens of both nations.
