A new ecotrail at Umm Al Quwain Mangrove Reserve featuring glowing geckos, green turtles, and other incredible species is set to open in early 2025. The trail will provide a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to connect with nature and raise awareness about the rich biodiversity of the UAQ coastal lagoon. It will be implemented in partnership with Emirates Nature-WWF, showcasing eco-friendly materials and sustainable design principles.

The ecotrail will feature a 250m wooden boardwalk, a 1.8km guided dune-based path, a shaded area, and an observatory majlis. The area will be illuminated with energy-efficient solar lights to reduce light pollution. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about various species, including geckos that glow in the dark, green turtles weighing over 100kg, and stingrays resembling guitars. Informative signs will provide information about the lagoon’s ecosystem and biodiversity.

Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, director general of Emirates Nature-WWF, highlighted the importance of healthy coastal ecosystems for sustainable tourism. The combination of conservation and ecotourism can maximize ecosystem services, boost tourism benefits, and support economic growth. The new eco-trail in Umm Al Quwain is a beautiful addition to the natural attractions in the UAE, offering a unique experience for tourists and residents alike.

Authorities emphasize the central role of UAQ lagoon in achieving environmentally sustainable economic growth and supporting the expansion of the emirate. The UAQ Sustainable Blue Economy Strategy 2031 aims to harness ecotourism to generate income and support the natural renewal of marine and coastal environments. The initiative aligns with the broader objectives of promoting conservation, biodiversity, and sustainable development in the region.

The opening of the ecotrail comes as a part of the World Tourism Day celebrations, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the UAE’s natural landscape. With a focus on promoting eco-friendly practices and raising awareness about conservation efforts, the new destination in Umm Al Quwain promises a memorable experience for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the unique ecosystems, observe fascinating wildlife, and learn about the importance of preserving the environment for future generations.
