The United Arab Emirates has recently announced new humanitarian projects in Chad, along with a $10.25 million contribution to UN agencies to assist Sudanese refugee women impacted by the crisis in Sudan. This move showcases the UAE’s commitment to addressing the urgent needs of women and children in the region, particularly focusing on healthcare, psychosocial support, and essential aid. During a visit to Chad by Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, the delegation met with Sudanese women refugees, civil society leaders, and UN agencies, as well as local officials to assess the humanitarian situation. They also visited several humanitarian sites, including a field hospital constructed by the UAE for Sudanese refugees.

The $10.25 million contribution will be distributed to various UN agencies to support women affected by the crisis. The funds will be allocated for maternal and child health, women’s health, sexual and gender-based violence programming, gender-responsive programming, and social cohesion initiatives to empower women in the host community. Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to supporting conflict-affected individuals, especially women and children. The UAE aims to provide immediate relief while empowering communities for long-term sustainability through its humanitarian efforts. Nusseibeh highlighted the importance of listening to and responding to the needs of women impacted by the crisis to ensure that aid effectively meets their requirements.

Chad has become the largest recipient of Sudanese refugees, hosting over 630,000 refugees, with a majority being women and children. The UAE acknowledges and supports Chad’s efforts in providing a safe haven for those fleeing conflict in Sudan. The UAE’s visit and financial contribution play a crucial role in addressing the immediate needs of these vulnerable populations. The UAE has been actively involved in providing humanitarian aid since the onset of the crisis, contributing $230 million in support, including food and medical supplies through numerous relief flights. Additionally, the UAE pledged $100 million at the Paris Donors Conference, with a significant portion allocated to international humanitarian organizations and supporting Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries like Chad.

The UAE’s commitment to addressing the needs of women affected by the Sudan crisis underscores its dedication to empowering women and promoting regional stability. The active participation of women is essential for sustaining peace in Sudan, which is a crucial aspect of the UAE’s approach to humanitarian aid. By engaging with women directly affected by the crisis and tailoring aid to meet their immediate and long-term needs, the UAE aims to make a positive impact in the region. The UAE’s contribution to UN agencies and its ongoing efforts in Chad highlight its holistic approach to humanitarian aid, prioritizing the most vulnerable populations, such as women and children.

Overall, the UAE’s humanitarian initiatives in Chad demonstrate its continued commitment to supporting conflict-affected individuals, particularly women and children, in addressing their urgent needs. By providing funding to UN agencies and engaging with local communities, the UAE aims to deliver effective aid that empowers vulnerable populations and contributes to long-term stability in the region. As a leading contributor of humanitarian aid, the UAE’s efforts in Chad and other conflict-affected regions showcase its dedication to addressing global crises and supporting those in need.
