Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) recently celebrated World Humanitarian Day on August 19th, alongside other components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the United Nations, and various international humanitarian organizations. The theme #ActForHumanity was highlighted, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the four Geneva Conventions in 1949 and the 160th anniversary of the First Geneva Convention in 1864. This day serves as a reminder of the critical work done by humanitarian workers in conflict zones, despite facing increased challenges and risks.

Sadly, hospitals and medical centers in conflict zones often become targets of systematic attacks, leading to the destruction of essential healthcare infrastructure. The safety of humanitarian workers is paramount as they strive to provide aid to wounded and sick civilians. QRCS stresses the importance of abiding by international humanitarian law (IHL), which prohibits any form of violation against civilians, relief personnel, and medical facilities in conflict areas. The organization recognizes the dedication and sacrifice of these workers in assisting crisis-affected individuals.

Secretary-General of QRCS, Faisal Mohamed Al-Emadi, acknowledged the difficulties faced by humanitarian organizations in delivering aid in conflict zones during a seminar titled “Challenges to Humanitarian Aid Delivery in Areas of Armed Conflict” held in honor of World Humanitarian Day. Al-Emadi emphasized the need for coordination and teamwork among governments, organizations, donors, media outlets, and public opinion to address the complex challenges arising from prolonged armed conflicts. He stressed the importance of adapting to growing challenges and supporting locally-led humanitarian efforts for swift crisis responses.

In line with their commitment to humanitarian work, QRCS’s Volunteering and Local Development Division participated in the World Humanitarian Day celebration program in collaboration with Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa). Director of the Division, Hussein Aman Al Ali, delivered a lecture on “Humanitarian Work as an Inherent Culture in Qatari Society” and announced a joint institutional volunteering project with Kahramaa. Additionally, QRCS organized an online workshop titled “Raising Community Awareness on How to Deal with Persons with Disabilities” for its members, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and support for individuals with disabilities.

As the world continues to face ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises, QRCS remains dedicated to supporting those in need and advocating for the protection of humanitarian workers. World Humanitarian Day serves as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and collaboration in addressing complex challenges in conflict zones. By working together as a global community, we can ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those who need it most and make a positive impact on the lives of crisis-affected individuals. QRCS’s ongoing efforts and partnerships reflect a commitment to upholding the principles of humanity and compassion in the face of adversity.
