Qatar urges international community to demonstrate courage and political determination to end Gaza hostilities

The State of Qatar recently made a strong statement at the 57th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, emphasizing the need for the international community to take decisive action to protect human rights. Qatar called for the international community to have the courage and political will to intervene effectively to stop the aggression on the Gaza Strip and end the Israeli occupation. The country stressed the importance of providing necessary protection to the Palestinian people, who are facing genocide in full view of the world, and ensuring that Israel complies with international resolutions and is held accountable for violations and crimes against the Palestinians.

Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar in Geneva, Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, highlighted the need for dialogue and political will to strengthen the international human rights system and build trust between societies and peoples. She emphasized the importance of respecting the humanity of all individuals equally, regardless of race, gender, color, or religion. Al Suwaidi also underlined the necessity of addressing violations and crimes against all people, without discrimination based on the identity of the victim.

The ongoing situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories was a major focus of Qatar’s statement, with Al Suwaidi pointing out the devastating impact of Israeli aggression and crimes. She cited the death of more than 40,000 Palestinians, injuries to tens of thousands, and the forced displacement of over 1.9 million individuals as a result of the occupation’s deliberate destruction of infrastructure and civilian facilities. Qatar expressed solidarity with the Palestinians and called for accountability for those responsible for these violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.

In addition to the situation in Palestine, Al Suwaidi also drew attention to the ongoing suffering of the Sudanese people, who have faced hostilities leading to a catastrophic decline in humanitarian, economic, social, and security conditions. Qatar expressed hope for a permanent ceasefire in Sudan, followed by inclusive negotiations aimed at achieving a sustainable peace agreement that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people for stability, development, and prosperity. The country called for international support to address the urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan and to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The State of Qatar’s statement in Geneva reflects its commitment to upholding human rights and advocating for justice and accountability in situations of conflict and oppression. The country’s call for the international community to break the silence and intervene to protect vulnerable populations demonstrates its dedication to promoting peace, security, and respect for human dignity. By highlighting the specific situations in Gaza and Sudan, Qatar has underscored the urgency of addressing ongoing violations of human rights and humanitarian law and working towards long-term solutions for sustainable peace and stability in conflict-affected regions.

Qatar’s emphasis on the need for dialogue, political will, and respect for universal human rights principles in the international human rights system underscores the country’s belief in the power of collective action to effect positive change. By raising awareness of the challenges faced by the Palestinian and Sudanese people, Qatar has demonstrated its commitment to standing in solidarity with those who are suffering and advocating for meaningful solutions to address the root causes of conflict and human rights violations. The country’s statement in Geneva serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and humanitarian principles in the face of injustice and violence, and of the collective responsibility of the international community to protect and promote the rights of all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances.
