The State of Qatar is advocating for stronger mechanisms to protect journalists in conflict zones, emphasizing the importance of physical protection, legal support, safety tools, and enhanced collaboration among states and international bodies. In a statement delivered by Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al Thani at the UN General Assembly, Qatar highlighted its efforts in hosting conferences and contributing to projects aimed at safeguarding journalists. The country has allocated $7.5m to support the UN’s digitization project for historical documents, aiding in the analysis of records dating back to 1945.

Accurate and reliable information is deemed critical for states, organizations, and individuals, with the Department of Global Communications and the UN’s network of information centers playing a vital role in raising awareness and engaging partners across various sectors. Transparency, objectivity, accuracy, and impartiality are essential for the effective operation of these entities. Particularly, the special information program on the question of Palestine sheds light on one of the oldest issues addressed by the UN, highlighting the current challenges faced by the Palestinian people.

Qatar expressed concern over the escalating number of Palestinian casualties in Gaza due to Israeli aggression, with over 43,000 casualties reported, including relief workers and journalists. The country condemned the killing of journalists in the context of Israeli aggression and stressed the importance of protecting them under international humanitarian law. As the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists approaches on November 2, Qatar commended journalists, especially those covering conflicts under challenging conditions, emphasizing the need for the safety and protection of women journalists.

Overall, Qatar’s efforts to protect journalists in conflict zones underscore the country’s commitment to upholding the safety and well-being of media personnel. By advocating for stronger mechanisms for protection, supporting important projects at the UN level, and condemning attacks on journalists, Qatar is taking a proactive stance in promoting press freedom and safety globally. As the international community continues to address challenges facing journalists, Qatar’s initiatives serve as a model for enhancing cooperation and support to ensure that media personnel can conduct their work safely and effectively in conflict zones.
