Qatar focuses on tackling urbanisation challenges with innovative strategies

The State of Qatar recently participated in the two-day ministerial session of the Bridge for Cities 2024 event organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna. The event focused on the theme ‘Cities of Tomorrow: Collaborative Strategies for New Cities’ and aimed to address the challenges of urbanization and develop innovative strategies to create sustainable, smart, and technologically integrated cities.

Minister of Municipality H E Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah led the State of Qatar’s delegation at the meeting. During his speech, he highlighted the importance of addressing the increasing challenges faced by the world through developing effective urban solutions. He emphasized the efforts made by Qatar at the national level to address urban challenges, including the Qatar National Vision 2030, the Qatar National Master Plan, and the Municipality Spatial Development Plan.

The Minister also mentioned Qatar’s achievement of having all its cities awarded the title of ‘Healthy City’ by the World Health Organization, which reflects the country’s efforts in providing sustainable and healthier options for its population. The session discussed national urban policies to address development challenges, including collaboration with local governments, innovations in urban planning, diversification of funding channels, and strengthening connections with organizations like UNIDO.

The discussions also focused on planning for the future of urbanization, forming partnerships, and enhancing economic growth. The participating ministers shared insights and experiences from their countries in innovating solutions for a sustainable urban future. The event aimed to promote collaboration and exchange of ideas among nations to develop strategies for creating sustainable and technologically advanced cities capable of addressing the challenges of urbanization effectively.

Overall, the State of Qatar’s participation in the Bridge for Cities 2024 event demonstrated its commitment to addressing urban challenges and developing innovative solutions for creating sustainable cities of the future. Minister Al Attiyah’s emphasis on the importance of collaboration and sustainable urban planning reflects Qatar’s dedication to building a better future for its citizens and contributing to global efforts in urban development. The event provided a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences, fostering partnerships, and enhancing cooperation among nations to build resilient and sustainable cities for future generations.
