The Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and international organisations, Idris Abdulrahman Al Khanjari, praised a report prepared by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on assistance to the Palestinian people. The report, which was read out by the Palestinian Ambassador on behalf of the Arab Group, highlighted the dire situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and the difficult living conditions of the population there. It pointed out the devastating impact of the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip and the restrictions imposed on the West Bank, which have severely damaged the Palestinian economy. The report also highlighted the destruction of infrastructure in the Gaza Strip and the high rates of poverty and unemployment, leading to unprecedented deterioration of humanitarian and environmental conditions.

Oman called for the implementation of “Clause 127 BB” of the Bridgetown Covenant from the 15th UNCTAD Conference, which emphasizes the need to support the organisation’s actions and calculate the overall cost of the Israeli occupation on the Palestinian economy and development. Oman also urged for research and studies to understand the rates of trade and development in Palestine, as well as the consolidation of activities by the UNCTAD unit responsible for assisting the Palestinian people through financial and technical support. The Sultanate of Oman supported the report’s emphasis on the immediate intervention of the international community to address the economic deterioration in the occupied Palestinian territories, the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, and the establishment of a foundation for lasting peace and development. This includes implementing a comprehensive recovery plan to enhance international assistance to the Palestinian people, release their withheld revenues, and lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip.

In its speech, Oman reiterated its unwavering support for the rights of the Palestinian people and urged the UNCTAD to increase efforts to help them achieve sustainable development. By highlighting the urgent need for international intervention and support for the Palestinian people, Oman emphasized the importance of addressing the ongoing economic crisis and advancing towards lasting peace and development in the region. The Sultanate of Oman’s call for action and assistance to the Palestinian people reflects its commitment to supporting those in need and working towards a better future for all.
